Coming Soon to St Catharines
In February 2012, we teamed up with the Niagara Health System (NHS) to announce the purchase and sale of the St. Catharines General Hospital. This institution on 142 Queenston Street is one of Canada’s oldest hospitals and has been in operation since 1865. The focus of our St. Catharines General development will be to convert this historic property into multi-unit residences.
The transformation will begin when the facility closes this spring after which the hospital will be developed into 125 permanent apartment-style residents. The NHS is nearing completion of construction of a new state-of-the art hospital located at First and Fourth Avenue in St. Catharines. This new one million square foot facility will open its doors to patients this March.
We are committed to preserving as many of the General’s historic features as possible. An important part of the St. Catharines General project will be finding ways to do this while incorporating the look and feel of the neighbourhood. The nearby Centennial Gardens and Old Welland Canal will enhance the natural heritage of the area. Some items of historic significance will also be moved for display at the new hospital site.
Project partner, ACK Architects has recently been recognized with a number of heritage awards for the firm’s work in the preservation of historical properties. Principal architect Michael Allen has indicated that while some parts of the building may be unusable, the site will not be bulldozed. In 2012, the firm was honoured with a commendation by the Niagara Heritage Council for its work in the preservation of a historical property in Niagara on the Lake.
We have had a lot of success in the past with acquiring and developing a number of aged buildings and transforming the surrounding communities. This St. Catharines project is now moving forward after years of community consultation with the Queenston Community Advisory Committee (QCAC) and approval of the Official Plan Amendment and Zoning by the City of St. Catharines.
