Don’t miss Cinéfest Sudbury!

happy friends watching movie in theater

It’s a great time to be a film buff in Sudbury! The 29th edition of Cinéfest Sudbury is coming soon to theatres near you. From September 16th to 24th there will be approximately 135 film screenings for the festival! From full length features to shorts, documentaries and animation, there really is something to suit every cinephile at this year’s festival. The Panoramic Properties blog team wants to fill you in on all you need to know to enjoy the festival this year.

Expansion and Evolution

Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival began back in 1989 as a three-day event. By 1993, the festival expanded to 5 days and screened over 60 films. Over the years it has continued to evolve and expand to meet the demand. Sold-out crowds led to the Festival Expansion Initiative in 2004 and expanded the length of the festival to its current 9 days.

A proud part of the history of Cinéfest Sudbury is the promotion of Canadian cinema industry and talent. The Northern Film Circuit (NFC) was established in 1992 to build audiences in Northern Ontario. This model was used to develop The Film Circuit, in partnership with the Toronto Film Festival Group, which now operates in over 110 communities.

Today, Cinéfest Sudbury is a year-round, full-service film organization. In 2010, the Cinéfest Sudbury Film Series was introduced. On the last Thursday of every month, the finest films from Canada and around the world are screened.

Opening Night Gala

The Tragically Hip documentary, Long Time Running, opens the festival this year. The film gives audiences a unique perspective into the band and their legendary 2016 tour after frontman, Gord Downie was diagnosed with incurable brain cancer. This gala event begins with a screening at SilverCity Sudbury on Saturday, September 16th at 7:00 PM. It will be followed by a reception at Science North Special Exhibit Hall (100 Ramsey Lake Road) which is within walking distance of Ramsey View Court.
