Want to do something that is good for your health, good for the environment, and a fun way to meet new people in your community? Break the supermarket habit, and do at least part of your food shopping at one of Ottawa's popular farmers' markets. Some of the city's best farm-to-you markets are just a short drive from the comfortable and affordable apartments at Baseline Court, 1785-1815 Baseline Road. We encourage all Ottawa residents to support the region's produce growers, especially the small family farms that are so importance to our area's unique appeal.

Some of the best farmers' markets near Baseline Court Apartments include:

Kanata Farmers' Market, 420 Hazeldean Road, Ottawa. Open every Saturday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, from early May through late October, and selling locally produced fruits, vegetables, meats, baked goods, honey, garlic, cheeses and eggs. Visit their website to learn more about the vendors you will meet there and the products currently available.

The Farmers' Market at St. Laurent Centre, 1200 Saint Laurent Boulevard. Convenient indoor shopping in a setting featuring a wide variety of other attractive shopping opportunities. Open 9:30 AM to 9:00 PM, Saturdays May through October.

Ottawa Organic Farmers, 223 Main Street, Ottawa. Open Saturday year round from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Their website lists the area vendors supplying a surprising array of locally produced goods.

If you have never shopped at a farmer's markets, here are a few tips for your first trip:

Bring small bills and change. You will be paying the farmer that grew the food, not a supermarket. While some farmers' markets accept credit cards and then settle up with the vendors at the end of the day, they process is awkward, time consuming, and costly.

Bring a number of small bags for individual purchases, and a large canvas bag you can fit the smaller bags into. This little bit of preparation will be appreciated by the vendors, and will make your shopping experience physically easier.

Many of the products sold at farmers' markets are available on a seasonal basis only. Check the market's web site, or give them a call to find out what products will be available before you visit, then sit down and plan your purchases. With a little forethought, you can set aside the time to can or freeze some of what you buy - or divide a larger purchase with a friend or relative.
