Healthy Hallowe'en treats

October 26 , 2012
Panoramic Properties Inc.

Hallowe'en is a magical time of the year. It is a celebration when children and adults alike let their imaginations take charge. The management team at Panoramic Properties' Baseline Court wish residents a fun and spooky Hallowe'en season. We’d like to suggest a few resources and ideas to help get the most from this unique holiday.

With locations in both Kingston and Ottawa, locally owned Audrey's Costume Castle and Dancewear (1460 Cyrville Rd.) is a great source of costume and decorating ideas. For those with a DIY spirit, Ragtime Vintage Clothing (43 Flora St.) is another locally owned shop with an impressive array of the items needed to create your own costume.

If you're looking for a larger one-stop-shop, the Walmart Supercenter is just minutes down the road and has a full line of affordable costumes and seasonal accent pieces. Your apartment will have the sense of magic and supernatural that goes with the season.

For most children, the opportunity to accumulate a horde of sweets is a big part (maybe the biggest part), of the Hallowe'en experience. Health Canada reminds us all of the importance of instilling good nutritional habits in children. Certainly we want the treats we distribute to be fun and enjoyable, but they don't have to be supercharged with sugars and calories.

Some tasty and healthy snack ideas (that kids will actually enjoy) include:
  • Cereal bars
  • Snack packets of dried fruit, baked pretzels, nuts and seeds
  • (Unsalted almonds, sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds)
  • Mini boxes of raisins
  • Individual juice drinks (100% juice)
  • Single serve packets of microwave popcorn

Kids accumulate more than enough candy by the end of the evening, so handing out no-food treats is a responsible choice. Consider the following:
  • Art Supplies
  • Stickers
  • Practical joke items
  • Pens and pencils
  • Costume jewelry

Finally, two reminders for parents:

Accompany smaller children on their travels, especially if they will be crossing streets after dark,
Ensure all children bring their edible treats home for you to inspect before consuming.

Happy Halloween from Panoramic!
