Plan a memorable Mother's Day at home

posted on May 05, 2021

A mother and daughter hug on Mother's Day.

We’ve been living through unusual times, but that doesn’t mean we should forget about observing the special days on the calendar. Mother’s Day 2021 is on Sunday, May 9th. Rather than wondering and/or worrying about what is open or closed, you can celebrate with Mom in the comfort and safety of your apartment. Here are a few ideas and tips for how to plan a memorable Mother’s Day at home.

Serve breakfast in bed

Set the right tone for Mom’s special day by starting her off with breakfast in bed. You can start off Mom's special day by ordering up a tray full of her favorite breakfast goodies and having them delivered right to her bed. Dads can help the kids make something special. If you can’t be with your Mom on Mother’s Day, you could order food from her favourite breakfast spot and have it delivered.

Make a Mom playlist

You know those songs your Mom is always singing to herself? Make her a special playlist of her favourite songs. If you can’t think of any music that you know she loves, don’t worry, Oprah has you covered

Get crafting

For kids looking to spend some quality time with Mom for a special Mother's Day at home, plan a fun and creative craft session. These simple and straightforward craft ideas for kids and moms are just about the perfect way to spend some time and end up with a souvenir of the day.

Cook something together

If your family has family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation, Mother’s Day is a great time to continue that tradition. Pass one of your favourite recipes on to you children, or ask your Mom for one. You can make it together at home, or over a Zoom call. If you don’t have a family recipe to pass on, Mother’s Day is also a great time to start this new tradition.

Plan a picnic

Even if it’s raining, you can’t be together, or your local park is closed this Mother’s Day, you can still plan a special picnic together. Plan what to stuff your picnic basket with and lay a blanket out on the living room floor. If you can’t be with Mom, you can have a Zoom picnic together.

High Tea with Mum

Would Mom prefer an elegant tea party to a picnic? Put the kettle on, create a special menu of finger sandwiches, shortbread and mini cakes and have high tea for Mother's Day at home!

Brunch

Every Mother is different. If your Mom is more the brunch-and-mimosas type, then get ready to organize an at-home or online brunch where the champagne and orange juice flow!

Have a bingo night

When the perfect idea comes along, it makes you think: “Bingo!” Whether Mom is big into Bingo, or does not yet realize that she’s into bingo, this idea is bound to bring a smile to everyone’s face. You can go classic bingo, or create a customized bingo card labelled with Mom’s favourite things! These free bingo card templates can be printed or shared online to play on any device.

Spa day at home

Give mom the gift of some “me” time. You can create your own DIY spa day kit for Mom and schedule some time in the day where she can pamper herself and take a break from daily responsibilities.

Create a custom photo album

Create a virtual photo album or an actual photo album you can hold in your hands and flip through. Once you have collected the photos you’d like to use, you can create and order an album on Shutterfly. You can choose from softcover, hardcover or even leather-bound albums.

Interview your Mom

Even though we’ve known our mothers our whole lives, we may be surprised by what we still have to learn about these special women in our lives. This Mother’s Day, you can conduct an interview with your Mom. You could ask about stories from their childhood, their wedding day or their first job. You may even discover hidden talents they have yet to share with you.

Watch a Mom-centric movie together

It’s been a busy day of recipes, DIY spa treatments, games and more. You’ve earned a little downtime with Mom. It’s time to relax and watch a movie. It could be Mom’s favourite flick or simply a movie where the mother’s role is central. This is also a great activity for those who can’t be with their Moms this Mother’s Day. All you have to do is arrange a time and start watching together over the phone, FaceTime or Netflix Party – no matter how physically distant you may be.

We hope these ideas for how to plan a memorable Mother’s Day at home help to make Mom’s day extra-special.
