We can't wait for summer in Halifax
posted on June 25, 2026
After a long East Coast winter, Halifax doesn’t just wake up, it erupts like a formerly dormant volcano. From the bustling boardwalk to the quiet serenity of the Halifax Public Gardens, summer is always a blast in Halifax.
Whether you’re a local who has lived here for decades or a first-time visitor stepping off a cruise ship, Halifax has a way of making everyone feel like they’ve found their special summer place. Here’s why we simply can’t wait for the season to start.
The pulse of the waterfront
The Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk is the undisputed heart of the city. Stretching four kilometers from the Seaport Farmers’ Market to the Casino Nova Scotia, it’s one of the longest continuous boardwalks in the world.
This summer, the Queen’s Marque district is the place to be. With its striking architecture and curated public art, it’s become a high-end hub for foodies. Grab a seat on a sunny patio, order a glass of local Tidal Bay wine, and watch the sailboats drift by. For a casual vibe, Salt Yard offers everything from pizza to boozy milkshakes.
Festivals are back in full swing
If you like your summer with a side of spectacle, Halifax is a city that loves a good party, and this year’s lineup of festivals and events is world-class:
- TD Halifax Jazz Festival (July 7–12): Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the main stage on the waterfront will be more electric than ever. Expect a mix of international legends and the best of the East Coast indie scene.
- Halifax Busker Festival (July 29–Aug 3): Also hitting its 40th year, the boardwalk transforms into a stage for acrobats, fire-eaters, and musicians from across the globe. It’s pure, chaotic joy for the whole family.
- Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo (July 1–6): A dazzling display of military precision, pipes, drums, and international performers that remains a cornerstone of the Halifax summer experience.
High-octane action on the water
For the thrill-seekers, the Canada Sail Grand Prix (SailGP) will return to Halifax Harbour in June. Watching F50 foiling boats "fly" across the water at speeds nearing 100 km/h is exhilarating. The harbour provides a natural amphitheater, making it one of the best viewing spots on the global circuit.
If you prefer a slower pace, Lake Banook in Dartmouth will host the ICF Junior & U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships. It’s a great chance to cheer on the next generation of Olympic hopefuls in a beautiful, park-like setting.
Hidden gems
While Halifax’s tourist spots are popular for a reason, locals know that the best summer days are often found just a few blocks away from the crowd.
- The Dartmouth Ferry: For just $3, the Dartmouth Ferry is the best mini-cruise in the world. Head over to Dartmouth to explore the independent breweries and vintage shops on Portland Street.
- Halifax Public Gardens: Step through the Victorian gates on Spring Garden Road and enter a 16-acre oasis of perfectly manicured flowers and duck ponds. It’s the perfect spot for a midday ice cream.
- Point Pleasant Park: At the southern tip of the peninsula, this park offers 39 km of trails. In the summer, keep an eye out for Shakespeare by the Sea, where outdoor theatre brings the woods to life under the stars.
Iconic Day Trips
No Halifax summer is complete without a short drive down the South Shore. Peggy’s Cove is a must-visit, but this year, we’re particularly excited for the 90th Anniversary of the Shore Club in Hubbards. Known as "Nova Scotia’s Last Great Dance Hall," it’s the ultimate destination for an authentic lobster supper followed by a night of live music and dancing.
A Taste of Summer
Halifax’s food scene is unmatched. Be sure to indulge in a Halifax Donair. Whether it’s your first or your fiftieth, eating one on a bench while looking at the water is a rite of passage.
For something a bit more refined, visit the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market on a Saturday morning. Pick up fresh strawberries, local honey, and artisanal bread for a picnic on Citadel Hill. As the noon gun fires (a tradition since 1856), you’ll realize there’s nowhere else you’d rather be.
Halifax in the summer is more than just a destination, it’s a feeling. So, pack your sunscreen (and maybe a light sweater) and enjoy everything it has to offer.
