Retiring in Niagara region – why you should consider Niagara Falls

posted on June 23, 2022 in retirement, Niagara Region

Ready to retire? Where you plan to live matters! If you're planning to settle down in Southern Ontario, you may be considering the Niagara region. Before you pack up and head to St Catharines (the largest city in the region), here are some great reasons to consider Niagara Falls instead.

Downtown Niagara Falls is where it's at

Niagara Falls is a bustling city where there’s never a dull moment. Fun fact, it’s been the honeymoon capital of the world for more than 215 years! Residents and tourists enjoy premiere attractions, fine dining, shopping, art, music, theatre and a casino!

Great attractions

The most obvious attraction in Niagara Falls is of course the falls! What better way to spend a day than to walk around its lookouts or throw caution to the wind and hop aboard the Maid of the Mist! Truly adventurous souls will love the helicopter tours of the falls and ziplining activities. Another nearby attraction is Niagara-On-The-Lake. This is essentially wine country and there are many opportunities to enjoy winery tours from some of the country's best vineyards.

Fine dining

The world is on your plate here! Whether you're up for a steak, Neapolitan pizza or Brazilian fare -- or anything in between -- there's no shortage of excellent restaurants in Niagara Falls. You can even dine above the falls at Skylon Tower! And wine lovers will love easy access to top rated local restaurants like Weinkeller where they make their own wine and fabulous meals out of seasonal local produce.

Chic shopping

You can shop till you drop here! If outlets and fabulous deals are what you seek, visit the Canada One Factory Outlet on Lundy's Lane. It boasts over 20 brand name stores! You can also visit the Outlet Collection in Niagara-on-the-Lake to shop from over 100 brand name stores. Fallsview Casino Resort Shopping Galleria features some fabulous shops as well.

Fine art

Niagara Falls is a great city for art lovers and makers. It’s home to several great art galleries and hosts an annual event worth checking out called Niagara Falls Night(s) of Art. Be sure to pay a visit to the Niagara Falls Art Gallery, Angie Strauss HOME Art Gallery, Ochre Gallery and Polly King Art Gallery.

Great music

You can always catch a great musical performance in Niagara Falls at restaurants and bars around the city, fabulous venues like The Avalon Theatre and The Seneca Queen Theatre, and Fallsview Casino. In June you can enjoy Niagara Falls Music Live, an annual event spanning 3 nights, 20+ venues and 50+ performances.

Excellent theatre

When you live in Niagara Falls, you can enjoy world class theatre performances at the Shaw Festival. The festival is held annually in Niagara-On-The-Lake, just 20 minutes away.

Casino Niagara

If you like to gamble, you’ll love Casino Niagara. It’s a wonderful casino that boasts over 1300 slot machines, 40 gaming tables and a poker room. It’s also a great place to dine (it has 3 restaurants) and enjoy a live performance.

It’s safe

Niagara has a low crime rate compared to other Canadian cities. In fact, its crime rate is 16% lower than the national average. It’s a very safe metropolitan area to live in.

It’s close to the States

If you like to have your foot in the door of the United States, Niagara Falls Ontario is just a bridge away from Niagara Falls New York. Crossing the border is easy, just head to the Rainbow Bridge which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
