When is the best time of year to move?

posted on June 26, 2025 in first time renting

It doesn’t get much more exciting than moving. A fresh start, a new neighbourhood, a new city – there’s a lot to think about and plan around. Are you planning to move? Here's when the optimal time of year to move is, plus helpful tips for making the process as smooth as possible at any time of the year.

When to move

We can’t always control when we move. Major factors that determine the time we move are often out of our control. Maybe you’re moving to relocate for work, to be closer to loved ones, or to go to university etc. These life events may wind up dictating when you have to move. But if you personally have more control over when you will move, then the optimal time of year to plan to move is either in Spring (ideally April to May) or in Fall (ideally September to October). Let's examine why these seasons are more ideal for moving than summer and winter.

The weather is better

A spring or fall move usually means cooperative weather. The temperatures are typically mild and pleasant. Moving can feel pretty overwhelming when you and your movers are lifting boxes in sweltering heat or up against icy conditions that make moving activities treacherous. No one wants to move furniture in a blizzard or under the hot summer sun. Spring and fall make moving far more manageable for you and any movers you hire.

Real estate churn is seasonal

If you’re buying a home, the real estate market tends to fluctuate with the seasons. Summer is often the busiest season for buying and selling, which can lead to higher demand for moving services and potentially inflated prices. By opting for a spring or fall move, you might find more moving companies have availability and may even offer low season rates.

The kids will fare better

Families with children tend to time their move to coincide with the end or beginning of a school year. This can minimize stress for their kids and avoid too much disruption in their education and social lives. A late spring move allows children to finish their current school year and settle into their new home before the summer break begins, giving them time to adapt before starting at a new school in the fall. Similarly, a fall move allows for a fresh start at the beginning of the academic year. Moving during the summer can be challenging due to vacation schedules.

Movers have more availability and may cost less

Because there is high demand for moving services in summer, there tends to be lower demand during spring and fall. You'll be more likely to secure your preferred moving dates and times, and possibly secure decent rates. You might also have more options when it comes to choosing which moving company you hire. Booking in advance is always recommended, but you'll generally find more open slots during the spring and fall seasons.

The holiday rush is chaotic

Moving around major holidays like Christmas adds a layer of stress to moving. Holiday traffic jams, limited availability of services, and social commitments can make holiday moves less than ideal. Avoiding moving during peak holiday periods is best.

Tips for a smooth move, every time

No matter when you move, these tips will come in handy for a more positive moving experience.

Declutter early

Start sorting through your belongings and decluttering your possessions weeks in advance. Donate, sell, or toss items you no longer need. Less stuff means less to pack, carry, and unpack, saving you time and energy.

Pack smart

Buy some sturdy moving boxes and plenty of packing materials like bubble wrap and packing paper. Label each box clearly with its contents and the room it belongs in. This will make moving and unpacking each box a breeze. Distribute weight evenly in the boxes you pack.

Get help

If your budget allows, consider hiring professional movers. If you can’t afford it, ask your friends and family and repay their generosity with pizza and drinks. Many hands make light work, especially with heavy furniture.

Protect yourself and your stuff

Wear comfortable, supportive shoes and use proper lifting techniques. Disassemble furniture where possible to make it lighter and easier to maneuver. Protect your most fragile items and wrap furniture to prevent damage.

Create an essentials box

Pack a separate box with essentials you'll need immediately upon arrival. A moving essentials box might include your toiletries, daily medications, phone and computer chargers, tools, and a change of clothes or two.

Take breaks and hydrate

Moving is physically hard work and you shouldn’t underestimate its toll on your body. Be sure to take regular breaks, rest, eat and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day.

We wish you all the best with your move! We hope these tips and insights help you plan an easy move that goes as smoothly as possible.
